World Cup-winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has been found not guilty of cursing at a referee in Brazil, escaping a suspension that could have reached 12 matches. Scolari had been accused of offending a referee in Palmeiras’ 2-0 win over Atletico Paranaense in a Brazilian league match on Aug. 14, when he was ejected in the second half after harsh complaints.

Werder Bremen scored three goals in the second half Wednesday to beat 10-man Sampdoria 3-1 in the playoffs for the Champions League. Clemens Fritz put Bremen ahead after 51 minutes before Stefano Lucchini was sent off with his second booking and gave away a penalty for pulling down Sebastian Proedl. Torsten Frings converted the 67th-minute kick.
